Portugal Day 7

Our first destination in Porto was one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, Livraria Lello. Opened in 1906, this stunning bookstore is renowned for its neo-Gothic architecture, including intricate woodwork, a grand staircase, and beautiful stained-glass windows. The interior is mesmerizing, with ornate details that make it feel like stepping into a magical world. Often associated with J.K. Rowling, it’s believed to have inspired parts of the Harry Potter series, particularly the design of Hogwarts. As a popular tourist destination in Porto, the bookstore now requires a small entrance fee. Despite booking the earliest appointment, we still found a long line when we arrived.

A city walk in Porto is a fantastic way to explore the vibrant atmosphere and rich history of Portugal’s second-largest city. Start at the Ribeira district, with its colorful buildings along the Douro River. Stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets filled with cafes and shops, taking in the views of the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Head towards the São Bento Railway Station, where the stunning azulejos (blue tiles) depict historical scenes.
Next, wander up to the Clérigos Tower, where you can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city. Visit the Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto), an impressive landmark with a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Finish your walk at Café Majestic, an elegant Belle Époque cafe, to relax and enjoy a traditional Portuguese pastry. This walk covers the heart of Porto’s charm, from its historic landmarks to its lively streets.

Bom Jesus do Monte was our last stop in Portugal. It is a stunning sanctuary located in Braga, just 50 minutes away from Porto, renowned for its baroque architecture and dramatic hillside setting. The site is famous for its monumental baroque stairway, which consists of 581 steps leading up to the sanctuary. These steps are adorned with fountains, sculptures, and chapels, each representing different stages of the Passion of Christ. The entire site offers both a spiritual experience and a glimpse into Portugal's rich architectural history.
At the top of the hill, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of Braga and the surrounding countryside. The church itself is a beautiful example of baroque design, and the entire site is a place of spiritual significance and a popular pilgrimage destination.
This stunning architecture at Bom Jesus do Monte wrapped up our 7-day Portugal trip in a peaceful and satisfying way. The serene atmosphere, combined with the breathtaking views and rich history, provided the perfect conclusion to our adventure. It was the ideal spot to reflect on the beauty, culture, and experiences we had throughout the journey, leaving us with a sense of fulfillment and tranquility.
