Japan Day 5
Day 3: Higashiyama + Gion + Philosopher’s Path
🕘 Morning: Kiyomizu-dera & Sannenzaka/Ninenzaka
Start at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of Kyoto’s most iconic spots
Take in the views from the wooden terrace and explore the temple grounds
Walk down the charming old streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka—great for souvenirs, matcha ice cream, and local snacks
🍵 Lunch suggestion
Eat at a traditional restaurant or tea house in Higashiyama—try Kyoto-style tofu or a light kaiseki lunch
🌸 Afternoon: Philosopher’s Path + Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)
Take a short taxi or bus to the Philosopher’s Path
Enjoy a peaceful walk along the cherry tree-lined canal (beautiful year-round)
End at Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)—a more subtle and serene counter to Kinkaku-ji, with a lovely moss garden
🌆 Evening: Gion or Pontocho
Head back toward Gion for a cultural evening stroll
Optional: Catch a cultural show at Gion Corner, or have dinner in Pontocho Alley—a narrow lane lined with restaurants and traditional charm
Keep your eyes open—you might spot a geisha or maiko on their way to an engagement
Our Day 6 was spent on Western and Northwestern part of Iceland. Driving time actually took longer than sightseeing time. The Northwest region is one of the least populated areas in the country, the most untamed region of the island and the least frequented by tourists. Fishing is the only economic activity in this region, which has a harsh climate and beautiful terrain.
