Czech Day 4

Hotel Ruže (which translates to Hotel Rose) is set in a beautifully restored 16th-century Renaissance palace, nestled in the heart of Český Krumlov. During our 2-night stay, we were immersed in the elegance and luxury of royal and noble traditions, surrounded by opulent decor and a refined atmosphere that perfectly captured the charm of its rich history. You can book the hotel here.

Český Krumlov Castle was our last destination in Czech. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The castle was expanded and renovated through various architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, reflecting the evolving tastes of its noble owners. The castle is one of the most impressive and well-preserved castles in the Czech Republic and played a strategic role in the region, overseeing the Vltava River and controlling the surrounding area. It was often the center of political and social life in Southern Bohemia. Over time, it shifted from a military fortress to a noble residence. It remains a symbol of the country's medieval and Renaissance history.

The fresco-style paintings on the outdoor walls of Český Krumlov Castle are indeed very unique. Unlike traditional wallpaper, which can be easily replaced, these murals are an integral part of the castle's structure, blending art with architecture. The intricate designs and vibrant colors give the castle a distinct charm.

We tried another restaurant, Krčma Šatlava, a medieval-themed tavern, for lunch. The menu features traditional Czech cuisine, including hearty specialties prepared over an open fire, such as spit-roasted pig, chicken, and wild game. The rustic interior—with its cavernous stone walls, flickering fire, and old-world charm—added to the immersive, time-travel feel of the place. While the atmosphere was unique and the food flavorful, we found ourselves comparing it to yesterday’s pork knuckle at Hotel Dvořák, and honestly, the crispy, tender “pig feet” still held the top spot in our hearts (and stomachs).

The castle tour wrapped up our 4-day journey through the Czech Republic. Although small in size, this country holds a rich cultural weight, having appeared in countless novels, films, and fairy tales, thanks to its atmospheric towns, hauntingly beautiful landscapes, and deep historical roots.
